Biography
Founded in 2006, the SIGNUM saxophone quartet is based in Cologne. After winning awards at international competitions in Berlin, Lugano and Verona, this exciting young ensemble is now invited to perform in the most important concert halls and festivals in Europe and in 2013 made its American debut with a concert at Carnegie Hall.
Recently SIGNUM has worked with Folkert Uhde (ION/Radialsystem Berlin) on a new project based on Bach’s „The Art of Fugue“ and played several concerts for saxophone quartet and orchestra. Future plans include quintet performances with the cellist Mario Brunello as well as a collaboration with the Grammy award winner Chilly Gonzales. Their debut CD (ARS) included works by Edvard Grieg, Maurice Ravel, Béla Bartók and Dmitri Shostakovich.
The quartet’s energy and artistic flair provide a real breath of fresh air on the classical music scene. The joy of experimentation and the versatility of the ensemble is demonstrated by their innovative programming, ranging from transcriptions from every era as well as premieres of works dedicated to them. The SIGNUM saxophone quartet often performs without scores, giving the ensemble an enormous artistic freedom on stage, allowing their audience to discover and experience classical music in a different way.
Blaž Kemperle soprano saxophone, Erik Nestler alto saxophone, Alan Lužar tenor saxophone, David Brand baritone saxophone
