Biography
Michael Petrov was born in Bulgaria in 1990. In 2002 he took part in the Kronberg masterclasses in Germany and went on to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School, and since 2009 at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Louise Hopkins. He has taken part in masterclasses with Mstislav Rostropovich, Bernard Greenhouse, Franz Helmerson and David Geringas.
In 2011 he won 1st Prize in the International Suggia Competition in Porto and in 2012 2nd Prize in the International Brahms Competition in Austria. He was selected for representation by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2013 and in 2014 won the Guildhall School of Music & Drama´s prestigious Gold Medal.
Concert highlights include recitals at the Kronberg and Los Angeles Cello Festivals and in 2012 he performed at Carnegie Hall New York in the Weill Recital Hall. He has performed Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante at the Barbican conducted by Gianandrea Noseda. Engagements in the 2013/2014 season included a recital at Wigmore Hall and performances of the Dvorák Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Tchaikovsky´s Rococo Variations with the English Chamber Orchestra and the Elgar Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Michael Petrov plays a Testore cello (c. 1740) on generous loan from a private individual.
