Biography
The Matosinhos String Quartet was created as an initiative of the Matosinhos City Hall and has enjoyed a residency and concert season in Matosinhos since 2008. Currently in its sixth year, the quartet has established itself as a leading ensemble in Portugal, making appearances in most festivals and concert venues, and collaborating with leading Portuguese musicians.
The Matosinhos String Quartet is committed to championing the repertoire of Portuguese string quartet music and has performed and edited many lesser-known works as well as embracing new music by contemporary composers. In more than 100 concerts, the quartet has premiered works by Portuguese composers, including António Pinho Vargas’ Concerto for String Quartet, premiered at the Casa da Música with the Oporto National Orchestra.
The quartet studied at the Instituto Internacional de Musica de Camara de Madrid with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet) and has worked with members of leading string quartets, such as the Alban Berg, Lasalle, Emerson, Melos, Vermeer, Kopelman and Talich String Quartets. The Matosinhos String Quartet and its members individually have been awarded prizes at the most important national musical competitions.
