vibrant, expressive, captivating!

„Although all three showed their own distinctive personalities, their vividly wide-awake ensemble playing made for an electrifying interpretation that commanded the audience’s attention for every single second.“

Few descriptions capture the Amelio Trio better than this review from the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Nominated by the Kölner Philharmonie, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Barbican Centre London as well as the Philharmonie du Luxembourg, the Amelio Trio has been selected as ECHO Rising Star for the 2026/27 season, including performances in many of Europe’s most renowned concert halls. Their international reputation has been propelled by major prizes, among them the second prize at the ARD International Music Competition 2023, the Grand Prize of the German Music Competition 2024 and the first prize at the International Schumann Chamber Music Competition 2022. Further distinctions include the Hans Gál Ensemble Prize 2025 and the Kammermusikpreis Hasselburg 2024, the latter awarded by violist Nils Mönkemeyer, with whom they performed as piano quartet at the prize ceremony.

The ensemble’s story began in 2012, when violinist Johanna Schubert, cellist Merle Geißler and pianist Philipp Kirchner – then just 13 years old – first played together for the German youth competition Jugend musiziert. More than a decade later, having spent over half their lives as an ensemble, their bond on stage is unmistakable – captivating audiences with their seamless interplay, stylistic versatility, and distinctive musical energy.
The Amelio Trio performs at renowned venues such as Wigmore Hall London, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Prinzregententheater Munich, Beethoven-Haus Bonn and Laeiszhalle Hamburg, as well as at major festivals including the Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele and the Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker. Their programs combine cornerstones of the classical-romantic repertoire with a strong commitment to contemporary music, reflecting their constant search for diverse expressive possibilities and their very personal approach to the works.

In September 2025, the trio’s debut album “Time in Flux” was released on GENUIN classics in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk Kultur. The recording features works by Ives, Beethoven, Mamlok, Brahms, alongside a newly commissioned piece by composer Birke Bertelsmeier.

The musicians are supported by scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and the Cusanuswerk. Johanna and Merle play on fine instruments by Lorenzo Storioni (Cremona 1779) from the Deutsche Musikinstrumentenfonds and by Giuseppe Dollenz (Triest 1875) on a generous private loan.
